rhodopsin (Rh)

A model of bovine rhodopsin (Rh), a 40 kDa modlecule consisting of 348 amino acids. Alphabets A,B,...F denote the seven alpha helices of the Rh molecule. The molecule in red seen lying across in the middle of Rh is the retinal chromophore.

Author;Prof. Koji Nakanishi of Columbia University

Various types molecular models exist, but when dealing with the stereochemistry of organic molecules, no kit is better than the Maruzen 4000 or the expanded Maruzen 7000 stereochemistry sets (1 A = 2 cm) for daily use by organic chemists and biochemists. The chair, boat, or envelope inversion of ring structures can be readily performed, strained rings can be constructed without difficulty, and projection angles of distal bonds can be measured directly. Particularly when engaged in studies where conformational analysis is centrally important, such as NMR coupling constants or circular dichroic exciton chirality, this set is indispensable. Discussions are frequently held over these models.

"Advanced set 7000" contains the following additional parts: cyclopropane, epoxide, aziridine, cyclobutene, benzene, naphthalene, porphyrin, and two types of octahedral metal (one for conventional use and the other for porphyrin metalation). Si is not included: however, since C-Si and C-P bond lengths are 1.85 and 184 picometers, respectively, the two can be used interchangeably in model 7000.

Atoms, carbonyl and other functional groups, and skeletons are all housed in separate compartments.

Combined usage of models 4000 or 7000 with the biochemistry molecular model sets, as an indispensable tool for daily research which include pre-assembled peptide bonds or ribose units, gives a much clearer grasp of interaction between small organic molecules and the peptidic or nucleic acid receptors. Without hesitation I recommend this 7000 set.

Needless to mention, models 4000 and 7000 are indispensable for any discussions involving 3D visualization.

---------------------------------------
PS: The model (5002 protein set) depicted is that of the bovine visual pigment rhodopsin, consisting of 348 amino acid units and 11-cis-retinal (shown in red). A, B, C,...etc. denote the seven alpha helices of rhodopsin molecule. Three to four researchers required three full days to construct the model, which critically assists in visualizing this important biomolecule.

A Message from the Manufacturer
Symmetry is a very important concept. The word "Symmetry" has been used for expressing something "bilaterally-symmetric," "beautiful," or "well-balanced" since a long time ago. Therefore, it is obviously an important concept for paintings, sculpture, and music. This word is also a very important concept for math, physics, and biology.

The purpose of this model is to learn the concept of symmetry without knowing that you are leaning it. You feel the model looks beautiful because it has a symmetrical structure.
Also, the "balls" used for this model are actually highly symmetrical and we believe that you can learn the concept of symmetric without knowing that you are learning it when you see the structure of the "balls." You put sticks in the "balls" to make a beautiful crystal models such as a crystal of diamond and it is significantly important for you to give attention to the directions of "balls" and the aspect with holes.
With putting sticks in the holes on the triangular or quadrangular surface of the "balls," you will learn the concept of symmetry.

We believe that many of you can learn the concept of symmetry without knowing that you are learning it with simply making the models that you feel beautiful. We strongly recommend you to make some models.
